I turn to Beyoncé to channel my inner diva. I listen to Taylor Swift when I’m infatuated or upset over a boy. If I’m feeling cocky I’ll chose Kanye West. If I want to feel confident in myself as a woman, Drake is the best choice. Childish Gambino is so fascinatingly different and eccentric at what he does and who he is, and when I’m having those emotional moments, he’s the man for me. 2 Chainz is ridiculous and hilarious and channels my inner obnoxious. I turn to the late great legends Tupac and Biggie when I feel like I can do anything. Dr. Dre/NWA are my choices when I’m feeling like a gangsta hustlin bitch and want to do dumb shit with my crew. Jay-Z is a legend and there will never be a day when he won’t be a major influence in my life. Eminem knows how to turn my anger, my frustration and my weak moments into something positive. The raw emotion in all of his songs, get me through the days. I’m in love with J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar’s words. Their raps make me weak in the knees and make my heart flutter like it is made of nothing but butterflies. Scott Mescudi, otherwise known as his alter ego, Kid Cudi, is my release from the world when I just want to float away. He is his own genre of music; I can’t just say he’s rap or he’s hip-hop, he created his own category. Then there’s Frank Ocean, who is the most beautiful human being on earth. He’s fearless in his music, he’s poetic, and he’s brave. He’s soulful and powerful without even having to try. I am always in the mood to listen to Frankie.
I am reading the best books right now.
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Lastly, The Rose That Grew From Concrete by Tupac Shakur
If you need any books to read right now, any of those choices would be a great pick. Would ya’ll judge me if I said Tupac’s book is making me become a better person?.. Cuz it is. When I read his poems I have hope for the future. Corny, I know, but it’s true. You can really tell he had a passion for words and rhythms and that’s what made him the greatest of greats.
